Potentially there are no big difference which source used as facts data and ADO (OLEDB) supports as SQL queries as SQL MDX queries.
Therefore it is possible (but I have not working examples, sorry) to use MS OLAP as large data mining storage and PivotCubeX as frontend for small cubes extracted as parts of large storage. It may be useful for data storage capacity like 100,000,000 cube cells or over
Usage of PivotCube for small/average MS OLAP cubes is useless as for technical reasons as for economical reasons - MS SQL costs much more than upgrade workstation for suitable work with PivotCubeX + non-expensive database (FireBird, Postgress, even dbf or mdb)
